Chevy Chase

According to Wikipedia, the name 'Chevy Chase' comes from the French word chevauchée – meaning a border raid. The dispute in question is said to have taken place in 1388 and involved Henry Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland (father of Harry Hotspur) and the Scottish Earl of Douglas.

This was a time of frequent border battles between the English and the Scots; the Battle of Otterburn also took place in 1388. Again according to Wikipedia, the Earl of Douglas attacked a hunting party in the Cheviot Hills, led by Percy. (The first Earl of Douglas died at Otterburn, so it's not clear whether this was the 1st Earl or the 2nd.)

There are two ballads that tell the story, versions of which have been collected in England, Scotland and the USA. They tell how only 110 of the combatants survived the battle, although it's not clear how many took part.

It is possible that the ballads actually tell the story of Otterburn, although the American scholar and folklorist Francis J. Child (who catalogued Chevy Chase as No. 162 in his collection) concluded that there were two separate events.

If you search for Chevy Chase on Wikipedia, you will get the American comedian and actor whose birth name was Cornelius Crane Chase.
